Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
These quick-reference guides cover a variety of subject-specific genealogical research topics. Compiled by authorities in their respective fields, the booklets are intended to distill a wealth of comprehensive reference information into concise nuggets of key facts and resources. Specific content varies according to the subject of the guide, but the format is generally similar. "Quick Facts" are highlighted at the top of the first page, next to a box that outlines the contents. Five or six separate sections provide an overview of key record sources—what they are, why they were created and when, and how to find/access them today—and are balanced by summarized historical facts to give useful background and context. Each section finishes with lists of books and websites for further reading. Peppered throughout are highlighted tips on access, search techniques, and more. The guides conclude with lists of places to go for more information, such as major repositories and online resources. VERDICT While not able to replace the comprehensiveness of a full reference work, these booklets do an excellent job of fitting a remarkably complete orientation to subject-specific research into succinct, well-organized packages. They will be especially useful for those new to a specific type of genealogical research or those who want something handy, reliable, and chock-full of key points to remind themselves of dates, websites, or other quick facts.—Jean Fisher, Tacoma P.L., WA
