Description: This is a resource for residents and general surgeons to prepare for the American Board of Surgery's certification or recertification examination. Each chapter provides a brief summary of important concepts and contains review questions at the end. This edition adds several chapters not in the previous edition, which was published more than 10 years ago.
Purpose: The objective is to prepare surgeons for the American Board of Surgery certification examination. The book covers important concepts that are often tested on the ABSITE and on the general surgery board exam. However, it falls short in providing a comprehensive review. Many chapters lack essential information for the boards..
Audience: It is intended to help general surgery residents and practicing surgeons prepare for the ABS exam, but the information seems more appropriate for junior residents and lacks depth and detail.
Features: The book covers basic and clinical information on most organ systems, critical care, and subspecialties. Unfortunately, it does not go into enough detail to prepare residents for the ABSITE or boards. Some chapters lack diagrams, algorithms, tables, charts, etc. Some topics are disproportionately represented. For instance, breast and trauma are among the shorter chapters, while gynecologic, orthopedic, and neurosurgery are among the longer chapters. Lastly, the review questions in the back of the book do not have explanations, which makes it difficult for readers to grasp the concept that is being reviewed.
Assessment: This book lacks essential information that should be reviewed while preparing for the American Board of Surgery examination. Many credible authors contributed to this book, but the chapters have a wide range of styles and the book lacks consistency. One chapter has only true/false questions, which does not simulate the real exam. Unfortunately, this is not a top choice for a learning tool. There are many other resources that would be better preparatory guides for the boards.
