Meet the Author


Oliver Otis Howard (1830-1909) was an American soldier and historian.  He fought in the Civil War as a Union officer, commanding the Army of the Tennessee in 1864 and participating in Sherman's March.  After the war, he was appointed to head the Freedmen's Bureau and helped found Howard University, which was named for him.
