Genesis of Israel and Egypt:

Overview

Genesis of Israel and Egypt proposes a radically new view of ancient history and the forces which shaped it. Many biblical characters are associated with Egypt and scholars have always attempted to connect biblical accounts of ancient times with history as recorded in Egyptian hieroglyphics. All attempts failed and the orthodox view developed that the major characters of Hebrew tradition were actually of such minor significance that they had no place in the Egyptian accounts. Although it was recognised that many ...

Although it was recognised that many tantalising similarities existed between the two histories, no one could make them tally. Using a wide range of sources and information meticulously collected by experts over the past century, Emmet Sweeney demonstrates that faulty methodology on the part of archaeologists has misled historians into placing characters and events in different eras when they were in fact contemporaneous. In the light of the revised chronology which he proposes, the jigsaw of ancient history can be fitted together very easily. We can see that the Exodus was indeed recorded by the Egyptians; Joseph, with the many-coloured coat, is the same person as Imhotep, the vizier who interpreted King Djoser's dreams; the Amalekites, mentioned in the Bible as Israel's oppressors, are the same tribe described by the Egyptians as the Hyksos. By synchronising the histories of the two neighbouring peoples, Emmet Sweeney provided us with a compelling new view of history. His work - which is both familiar and spectacularly fresh - is lucidly written and will appeal to anyone with an interest in the history of ancient times.
