Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Dickey (Drive Me Crazy) offers more sex-drenched melodrama with an instantly engrossing story about a couple whose marriage is tested by secrets both familial and sexual. Beautiful, independent "financial guru" Genevieve Forbes (n e LaKeisha Shauna Smith) and her husband, a medical research scientist (and the novel's unnamed narrator), are by-products of broken families. Genevieve ran away after suffering intolerable abuse by her murderous father and cruel grandmother, and the husband's rural Texas childhood was marred by his mother's death and a virtually absent, errant father. The death of Genevieve's grandmother Willie Esther forces both to return to her backwoods Alabama hometown for a reunion that stirs up old grudges, reopens still-painful wounds and sparks reckless familial infighting. While the narrator finds himself mildly amused by Genevieve's aging, folksy relatives, he's immediately salivating over Genevieve's hootchy-cootchy sister, Kenya. Their red-hot affair shifts into high gear just as Kenya's roughneck fiance, Deuce, pays them a surprise visit and more secrets about Genevieve's childhood leak. Dickey creates a smidgen of suspense around the survival of the couple's marriage and the revelation of various secrets, but that's hardly his main goal. What the novel lacks in plot it makes up for in explicit sex and hot-tempered fireworks. Agent, Sara Camilli. (May) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Chick-lit sensation Dickey (Drive Me Crazy) presents this sizzling, sexy, downright gritty love story about a professional African American couple living the good life in Los Angeles until their pasts come back to haunt them. The narrator's wife, Genevieve (pronounced ZHAWN-vee-EHV), receives a phone message from Grandpa Fred that Willie Esther Savage is dead. An intense unveiling of ugly secrets ensues as the couple travels to Odenville, AL, to bury the woman who was the reason Genevieve changed her name, smokes "bush," and cannot be the sexually free woman the narrator desires. The narrator is shocked to meet the lower-class family he never knew existed, with its violent and crass ways. But when "sister" Kenya comes on the scene, he's overcome by her physical magnetism. This book reminds us that marriage vows are sacred and that sex is never just sex but has its consequences. However, it's Dickey's aplomb in granting his characters the freedom to hit, holler, and ride their steamy, explicit passions that will clinch this book's popularity. For all popular fiction collections. [See Prepub Alert, LJ 1/05.]-Jennifer Baker, Seattle P.L. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Meet the Author

Eric Jerome Dickey

Eric Jerome Dickey is a #1 Blackboard, Essence, and New York Times bestselling author with over four million copies of his books in print. Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, he currently lives in Los Angeles. Author website: ericjeromedickey.com.

Biography

Eric Jerome Dickey was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and attended the University of Memphis (the former Memphis State), where he pledged Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and earned a degree in computer system technology. In 1983, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in engineering.

After landing a job in the aerospace industry working as a software developer, Dickey's artistic talents surfaced, inspiring him to become an actor and a stand-up comedian. He soon began working the local and national comedy circuit. In the early 1990s the aerospace industry took a downward turn and Dickey found himself "downsized," but took this as an opportunity to embark on a writing career.

Having written several scripts for his personal comedy act, Dickey started writing poetry and short stories. He joined the IBWA (International Black Writers and Artists), participated in their development workshops, and became a recipient of the IBWA SEED Scholarship to attend UCLA's creative writing classes. In 1994 his first published short story, "Thirteen," appeared in the IBWA's River Crossing, Voices of the Diaspora: An Anthology of the International Black Experience. A second short story, "Days Gone By," was published in the magazine A Place to Enter.

With those successes behind him, Dickey decided to fine-tune some of his earlier work and developed a screenplay called Cappuccino. Cappuccino was directed and produced by Craig Ross Jr. and appeared in coffeehouses around the Los Angeles area. In February 1998, Cappuccino made its local debut during the Pan African Film Festival at the Magic Johnson Theater in Los Angeles and is currently on the film festival circuit.

Dickey's book-signing tours for Sister, Sister, Friends and Lovers, and Milk in My Coffee took him coast to coast and helped propel these novels to No. 1 on the Blackboard bestsellers List. His books have been featured in many publications, including Essence magazine and USA Today, and have appeared on the bestseller lists of The Los Angeles Times, Blackboard, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. Dickey has appeared as a guest on many television shows, including BET's Our Voices and CNN's Sunday Morning Live.

    Very Sensual and Engaging

I have read other books by Mr. Dickey so I was expecting a great read...and I was NOT disappointed. This book is very sensual and provides a great story with great twists. It was truly unpredictable and had a nice spin at the end which gets you thinking. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to be enthralled.

    good and steaming

Eric Jerome Dickey is one of my favorite authors. His writing style is very sleek and to the point. When you read his books, he can describe a scenry without it being 10 pages long. I like that he ties his characters from other stories into a new book. It feels like they are real.

    Loved it!

Unpredictable and exciting! I coudn't put my Nook down. The graphic sex scenes were a little much. It made the narrator sound like a horndog, but it was understandable for the characters and the plot. I loved it! I will definitely have to check out the author's other books.

This book is the SHH..I ain't gone say it, I ain't gone say it!!! Seriously though this is the best book I've ever read. I absolutely love this book. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. Dickey, you are bad, B-A-double D-D!! I mean "Genevieve" totally blew my mind. One thing I love about Dickey is that he's so unpredictable...he leaves you wanting more. I mean what can I say he is one of the best authors, Mr. Eric Jerome Dickey, and I absolutely love him!! My thoughts on Genevieve by Eric Jerome Dicky.

A whirl wind would be a good overall description for this book. This book took me on a mental roller coaster, never was there a dull moment. Its about an well off women who grew up in the slums but never let her environment dictate her future. As a result of her self renovation Genevieve lost site of what was most important...being true to thy on self. Dont want to give out to much essentail info, so pick up and enjoy. Peace!!!!

Great book would not change a thing

This book was really good like majority of his books. I read it in one day and I was really surprised because I have never done that before. From the time I picked it up I could not put it down. I read that book in bed and in the bathroom. IT IS ADDICTIVE. Get it.

    I Also Recommend:

First reading of Eric Jerome Dickey...

...and it might be my last. The build-up, characters, and storyline were all good but the ending fell flat and left many holes and questions unanswered. I enjoyed the ride of reading it but only became frustrated that I spent all my time reading it when the ending wasn't that satisfying. It definetly could've had a MUCH better wrap-up and I think Mr. Dickey got real sloppy for whatever reason... So great read, but a sorry, regretful end.
