This book provides a comprehensive discussion of cancer of the genitourinary tract organized by organ system, focusing on surgical treatment but including overview sections for each organ system. The text is rounded out with appropriate discussion of nonsurgical modalities. This book is intended to provide an up-to-date, systematic discussion of the treatment of genitourinary cancer, providing surgical nuances to improve on time-honored techniques, with succinct overviews of the present state of knowledge of the disease process. These worthy goals are effectively met. All urologists must master the care of the cancer patient. This book provides an excellent reference for the practicing urologist or urology resident to be used to help refine operative technique or to get a current overview of the topic and obtain references for further reading. The book sports a handsome cover containing a well-organized table of contents and helpful index. The illustrations are large and of high quality, clearly showing the surgical techniques being described. The format of the titles and subtitles make for easy reading, a definite improvement over the first edition. This text has undergone a comprehensive renewal, with more than 50 percent of the chapters being rewritten by new authors and the majority of the balance being rewritten and updated. This is an excellent reference for the practicing urologist or urology resident, handsomely presented, well organized, and illustrated with large easy to read and understand figures. This is not just a rehashing of the previous edition, but a comprehensive update and improvement. The leaders in the field succinctly avail their knowledge and experiencethat will undoubtedly benefit the reader. I strongly recommend it for the urology resident and practicing urologist.

This edition (first, 1990) provides the urologist with didactic views and practical guidance covering surgical approaches, diagnostic modalities, nonsurgical therapies, and areas of continuing and supportive care. Organ specific neoplasms are discussed in individual chapters preceded by a comprehensive overview section. The spectrum of surgical recommendations encompasses traditional as well as recent approaches such as laparoscopic extirpative surgeries, newer continent urinary diversion, improved techniques for radical retropubic and perineal prostatectomies, and nerve sparing retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy. Alternative and adjuvant approaches to the management of genitourinary tumors are presented by radiation therapists and medical oncologists, while chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and hormonal therapy are presented from the perspective of urologic oncologists as well as medical oncologists. A concluding chapter covers the genetic base for urologic malignancy. Includes detailed b&w drawings and photographs. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
