Description: Part of the Radiologic Clinics of North America series, this book provides a succinct overview of current practice and advances in genitourinary (GU) imaging. The chapters are well formatted with excellent descriptions of radiology techniques with corresponding images. The unique aspect of this book is the radiologist's perspective of optimal imaging techniques and modalities to establish the most accurate diagnosis.
Purpose: It is designed to review and incorporate the advances in radiology in diagnosing GU abnormalities. The objective of providing an up-to-date and concise GU imaging book has been met by this book.
Audience: According to the author, the book is designed for clinical radiologists or radiology residents, but it also would be a welcome reference for urologists and urology residents.
Features: The first chapter, an update on dual energy CT (DECT), is a detailed overview of the technique, indications, and evaluation of this modality. The second chapter, on the important topic of GU imaging of children, discusses the advances in imaging techniques for this population as well as the appropriate imaging modalities to maximize the accuracy of diagnosing a particular urologic abnormality. The difficult topic of adrenal imaging is covered in the next chapter, with excellent descriptions of disease processes with corresponding imaging pictures. The next two chapters review the pertinent findings of benign, malignant, infectious, and inflammatory conditions of the kidney, with excellent accompanying photographs. This chapter on imaging of the ureter discusses the difficulty of this procedure and the requirement for multimodality imaging to properly visualize the ureter. The next two chapters cover ultrasound of the scrotum for both benign and malignant conditions and imaging of the bladder. The last chapter covers the difficult task of identifying the pathology of the retroperitoneum with imaging. The pictures accompanying the text provide readers with a better understanding of difficult clinical situations. The shortcoming of this book is the lack of imaging of the prostate (an area which will be covered in a forthcoming title in this series).
Assessment: This book offers a concise overview of the many challenges of radiologic imaging to diagnose urologic conditions. It focuses on the proper technique and appropriate imaging modality for each one. It serves as an excellent quick reference for radiologists dealing with the GU system or urologists caring for patients with GU conditions.
