Covering nearly 6,000 titles in such popular genres as crime, adventure, romance, western, science fiction, fantasy, and horror, Herald's best-selling reference defines each, describes its characteristics and subgenres, and groups authors and books according to type or subject. You'll also learn about some of the latest subgenres that have emerged.

Find the best read-alikes for patrons and build a fiction collection that appeals to the broad spectrum of readers that you serve with this thorough guide. Covering nearly 6,000 titles in such popular genres as crime, adventure, romance, western, science fiction, fantasy, and horror, Herald's indispensable reference defines each, describes its characteristics and subgenres, and groups authors and books according to type or subject. You'll find everything you need to know about traditional genre literature, and you'll learn about some of the latest subgenres to emerge - e.g., virtual reality, bioengineering, and biothrillers. A entirely new chapter covers historical fiction, and there are also lists of resources for further research, including numerous genre-related online sources. Invaluable as a reader's guide, and as a resource for bookstore personnel, Herald's work will also be useful to publishers and writers of genre fiction.

Editorial Reviews

This reference guide to genre fiction offers so much more than just a range of suggestions to assist readers' advisors. Individual sections examine the origins of historical, western, crime, adventure, romance, science fiction, fantasy, and horror novels with numerous subgenres included. Influential and popular authors and titles follow with many entries annotated. Bibliographies, encyclopedias, writer's manuals, publishers, organizations, conventions, awards, book clubs, and online resources (with last date accessed) are listed at the end of each chapter. Three comprehensive indexes by author/title, subject, and character also are included. Information is specific, concisely presented, and attractively arranged. Young adult readers are poised and ready to devour adult novels. In the area of fantasy especially, the division between YA and adult can be difficult to determine, but this resource will serve teen patrons well and help them bridge the gap into adult literature. Young adult librarians will find similarities between this new edition and Herald's earlier works, Fluent in Fantasy (Libraries Unlimited, 1999/VOYA December 1999) and Teen Genreflecting (1977/VOYA August 1997), but none precludes the use of the others, either in conjunction or as additional resources. By sheer volume alone, Genreflecting encompasses the most information. Teen Genreflecting's format is similar but on a reduced scale and includes Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) genre lists where available plus suggestions for teen involvement. Fluent in Fantasy identifies YA novels by a symbol, lists YALSA Best Fantasy for YA, and also includes a recommended core collection. In small public libraries,Genreflecting will suffice for both smaller volumes. Where there is a need and cost is not a consideration, all three books complement each other and each offers its own advantages as a useful tool for librarians, teachers, and library patrons. Index. Biblio. 2000, Libraries Unlimited, 553p. PLB $49. Ages Adult. Reviewer: Nancy K. Wallace SOURCE: VOYA, August 2001 (Vol. 24, No. 3)
