Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This volume is a companion to Shimoku's excellent Genshiken manga (LJ 3/15/08), about a college club of otaku (hardcore fans) devoted to anime, manga, video games, cosplay, figurines, and doujinshi (fan-created comics, often of a pornographic bent). It profiles the main characters; provides some background on various aspects of their milieu (including the Tokyo electronics and hobby district Akihabara and the immense doujinshi sales event Comiket); and includes some Japan-specific historical tidbits about the club's areas of interest (for instance, the tiger-striped bikini of Rumiko Takahashi's character Lum from Urusei Yatsura was the most notable early inspiration for cosplay). Also featured are three short Genshiken text stories by guest writers and a script from Kujibiki Unbalance, a fictional anime series the Genshiken members follow. In an interview, manga creator Ken Akamatsu (Love Hina; Negima), who started as a college doujinshi artist, testifies to Genshiken's authenticity regarding the club experience and doujinshi creation. VERDICT There is no interview with Shimoku himself, and unfortunately almost no insight into his background, his creation of the series, or his views regarding it. Fun for fans, but not essential.—S.R.
