Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This wonderful story relates the adventures of a boy and his unlikely pet. The wrinkle here is that the pet happens to be an enormous Alaska brown bear named Ben. Filled with rich detail about life in a small Alaskan fishing town, this book carefully explores the relationship between Mark Andersen and Ben. It describes their trips in search of food, Mark's knack for scratching Ben in just the right places, Ben's willingness to tag along with and obey a human being, all while Mr. and Mrs. Andersen marvel at the unique bond between their son and one of nature's most fearsome predators. A crisis comes after Ben attacks his former owner and the townspeople clamor for Ben's destruction or removal from their midst. Although devastated by the potential loss of his best friend, Mark accepts the wisdom of sending Ben away. Eventually, the Andersens are reunited with their prodigal pet who manages to save his adopted family when they are confronted with man-made danger. In the end, Mark's love for and commitment to Ben and his well being ultimately save the brown bear from destruction. Originally published in 1965, Gentle Ben is a timeless classic that will continue to interest new generations of readers. On a cautionary note, the book does have a dated view of the role of women, both at home and in the workplace. 1997 (orig.

    An American Classic

This is a classic tale. A must read for sportsmen and outdoorsmen. Even though it is written for younger audiences, it still will capture the hearts of those much older. Its scenery is a pure delight and the characters our friends. The story is about the journey from boyhood to manhood, from cub to grizzly. A story about nature and it¿s continued survival.

    A greate and touching book

This was a great and touching book. You will like this book weather you like bears or not. I am one of those kind of people that don't like to read but this one really got me. There is suspense, touching senses, sad sense, and many more expressions. I would highly recommend reading this book.

    Gentle Ben

'If you were mine' Mark said 'I'd take you down to the stream just beyond the flat. The grass is half as high as I am and there are lots of roots and things. There's rocks too. We could turn them over and you could eat the grubs and mice under them. If you were mine-.' Gentle Ben is the touching story of a boy named Mark who goes to an old shed every day after school to see Ben, a brown bear that is chained by his owner. Mark lives near Orca City, Alaska with his parents. Fog Benson, Ben's cruel owner, also lives in Orca City. When Mark is caught with Ben, he talks his parents into buying Ben. They keep him in the garage with a heater, lots of hay and salmon. Then one night, Fog Benson and a group of people go to steal and hurt Ben. Fog is attacked and wouned by the bear and the city finally realizes how big and strong Ben really is. Now they are out to destroy Ben. Only his parents, who realize how much Ben means to Mark, can save him. If you love animals and are interested in what you just read, then I reccomend you read Gentle Ben. Readers of all ages will enjoy this classic novel by Walt Morey.
