The story begins with a nonfiction, three-paragraph explanation of the Giant Octopuses and their behavior, their size, where they live and how they reproduce. The realistic fictional story then takes shape. A mother octopus jets through the ocean pumping water through her and looking for a place to lay the eggs she is carrying. While searching, she is attacked once by a crab, and a second time by a Wolf eel. She finally finds a cave where she lays her 60,000 eggs, hanging like grapes. She protects them without resting or eating for five months. As her eggs hatch and swim away, she ends her life cycle, and vanishes into the shadows of the deep sea. This is an excellent read for young inquisitive minds. An audio book supports the hard copy. The pictures are bold, colorful and detailed to add to the descriptive nature of the read. Included on each page of realistic fiction narrative is a short fact or two to support the understanding and wonder for the young reader. A great strength, also, is the rich and robust vocabulary, written in a manner in which context clues and pictures can help a developing reader decode the words and meaning. Reviewer: Charles E. In this collaboration (Candlewick, 1998) between author Karen Wallace and illustrator Mike Bostock, youngsters are introduced to the gentle giant octopus, a sea creature that jets through the water and "slides over the seabed" and whose body "stretches like taffy over the stones." Wallace's poetical phrasing accompanied by the gentle, yet vividly compelling watercolor illustrations make this more than just an informational read. The picture book format will keep the interest of young children while presenting the facts about this lesser-known inhabitant of the sea. Narrator Alan Marriott, best known for his voices on the TV show Bob the Builder , provides a well-articulated narration; sound effects and background music enrich the telling. The CD can be listened to with or without page-turn signals. An additional track provides more information about the sea creature.     Excellent little book

    Bought this for my 3 yrs old grandson who loves octopus. The illustrations are wonderful and very age appropriate material. If your child likes octopus this is a great choice! Or for that matter any child will like it.
