From the opening section on "Suggestions for Making Your Hikes Happier" to the quick hits on scenic overlooks and wayside rests, "Gentle Hikes" offers a great range of valuable information for walkers.
Trails in the North Shore state parks, the Superior Hiking Trail and even Duluth's Lakewalk are marked with icons indicating degree of difficulty, stairs, inclines, placing of benches, photo opportunities and maps.
Entries also include "foot notes" with additional information about the hike and nearby sites. For example, the note on Pincushion Mountain informs hikers that the area features cross-country ski trails, skiing lessons and a bed-and-breakfast.
A "Says Who?" note with an owl icon provides facts about the benefits of exercise.
Special chapters address hikes for people traveling in RVs.
Each hike section also gives information with explicit trailhead directions, contact phone number, trail length and description, facilities such as parking, wheelchair access, toilets and fees.
