Meet the Author

Patrick J. Carnes is a nationally-known speaker on addiction and recovery issues. He is the author of Out of the Shadows, Contrary to Love, A Gentle Path Through the 12 Steps, and Don't Call It Love. He is the clinical director for sexual disorder services at The Meadows in Wickenburg, Arizona. Carnes is the editor-in-chief of Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention, the official journal of the National Council of Sexual Addiction/Compulsivity, an organization for which he also serves as a board member. He also serves on the national advisory board of the American Academy of Health Care Providers in the Addictive Disorders.

    A Gentle Path to the Twelve Steps

    "The Gentle Path" is not so gentle. It asks penetrating questions of the addict who reads it. Like a workbook, one writes down one's own personal answers to the questions. Nobody but oneself needs to read the answers, therefore one can be honest making this a positive learning experience for the addict. See the questions and answers in black and white can be powerful and a helpful tool to begin recovery. Recommended to all addicts from food to drugs to workaholics.

    Reading through the Gentle Path

    I purchased this book after many of my recovery patients strongly recommended it to me. I have many mixed feelings about it. I was hoping for a book more on the order of the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book with practical advise, sage wisdom and stories to guide and inspire me. To this end, I was only partially satisfied. While Patrick Carnes asks some penetrating questions and frequently gives the admonition of being gentle and kind to yourself, I wasn't ready for a "workbook" with a lot of room to scribble down my thoughts, feelings and reactions. Much of this paperback book is dedicated to space in which to write or journal. I would rate it as a mediocre volume aimed at the very newcomer or beginner in recovery from substances and or problematic behavior.
