Overview

This fun, funky debut album is noteworthy on several fronts, the most obvious being the tender age of the artist -- a fact that until now has unfortunately overshadowed Stacie Orrico's considerable talent. The effervescent 14-year-old vocalist demonstrates remarkable vocal savvy throughout, moving smoothly between upbeat, Britney Spears-styled dance numbers and grittier Crystal Lewis-inspired R&B stylings. She also cowrote several of the album's songs. The material consistently avoids bubblegum simplicity: the emotional "Dear Friend" was written for an acquaintance battling anorexia, while the hit single "Don't Look at Me" anticipates the prospect of fame as Orrico advises fans, "Don't look at me if you're looking for perfection... look at Him." The artist steers clear of Christian cliches in her songs, and the crack production team of Mark Heimermann, Michael-Anthony, and Tedd T. help her to avoid musical ones. Creative sampling, overdubs, and other urban/R&B influences add a sense of fun and a decidedly youthful energy to Genuine without overshadowing the singer's remarkable voice.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Campbell
Genuine is the debut disc from alternative CCM artist Stacie Orrico, which combines her positive Christian convictions with musical inspiration, embracing the pop/urban influence represented by Christina Aguilera and Lauryn Hill. Orrico deals with tricky lyrical issues (insecurity, peer pressure, anorexia) while musically sustaining mainstream crossover appeal. To her credit, Orrico co-wrote "Don't Look at Me," "Genuine," and the disc's closing track "Dear Friend," exclusively.

Stacie is so pleasing to me that I bought more than one of each c.d. she has come out with! This may sound crazy, but I tend to break c.d.'s and I can't possibly live without her music! I need to hear her encouraging songs to get through the day! Stacie,Stacie,Stacie thank you for being born!!!

For a first cd, at such a young age, I'd have to say this is one of the best Christian cd's I have ever heard. Stacie Orrico has such a wonderful voice and the production team did a great job of reflecting that. The pop upbeat songs mixed with the r&b and emotional songs make the cd really spectacular. I give it the highest rating it can get, and I recommend it to all pop lovers, regardless if you don't enjoy Christian music, because you WILL enjoy this.

Her music is really good. It's upbeat and it gets the message out. I really like the lyrics. There's a little something for everyone. I can't wait for the next cd! She's got a lot going for her!

she has an awesome voice for just 14 years old...i mean she's really great...this cd really helped me to deal with trying to fitting in ...like take ''genuine'' for instance...this song explains how trying to fit in with these other ''groups'' will never do anything for you...there is no one who could ever fullfill you the way Jesus can...he's genuine...why not give him a try???

I love Stacie's album, she has a voice like an angel. She gets a good message out to teens in her songs. ''Ride'' and ''Dear Friend'' are really good.

14-year-old Stacy Orrico's strong voice fills listeners ears with delight. Her album entitled Genuine constitutes a mix of both up-beat pop songs like her debut hit ''Don't Look at Me'' along with ballads like ''Restore My Soul.'' This singer is very different from other teenager singers. Her lyrics don't constitute of just boy crazyness and sexuality like other singers her age. Her music carries a deepr meaning: A love for God. She is a role model for kids her age and adults as well. Stacy Orrico's songs definately appeal to listeners of all ages. No matter what mood you are in, her songs will lift your spirits!

If you're sick and tired of listening to ex-Mousketeers singing about trivial matters in songs that all sound alike, then this album is what you want. All the songs, most of which are funky and upbeat, come from the heart. The ballads aren't sappy or dragging, and Dear Friend, written by Orrico herself, is beautiful. This album will leave you feeling happy and uplifted. Highlights: Don't Look at Me, Holdin' On and Genuine.
