Geology Underfoot covers popular state parks, national parks, and public lands from Snow Canyon to Zion, Fish Lake, and other places on the southwest side of Utah. It also includes Goblin Valley, Goosenecks, Valley of the Gods, Upheaval Dome, and other spots in the southeastern quarter of the state. The 33 brief descriptions include simple maps and directions for getting to viewpoints, and explanations of the geological processes that formed the landscapes of southern Utah. It is written in non-technical language but geological terms are introduced and defined. Black and white photos and line drawings illustrate the formations and terrain. A glossary and index complete the hiking guide. What makes this book different among the sea of geology references for Utah's magnificent landscapes, is the focused and simple "be there, see that" approach. It is not a comprehensive explanation of mountain formation or valley transformation, and it is not a driving guide cross-sectioning southern Utah. It is nothing more than it claims - directions to places where geological evidence can be readily viewed, and simple explanations for what is visible. For someone whose geology is limited and who wants to understand how a popular vista was created, this could be a useful book. The simplicity may also render the text suited to young adult readers, and give parents an easy way to field those "why" questions.
