Jacobs' text provides a clearly written, carefully developed course in high school geometry. The text covers lines and angles, congruence, inequalities, parallel lines, quadrilaterals, area, similarity, right triangles, circles, concurrence theorems, and regular polygons. It also touches on transformations, geometric solids, and non-Euclidean geometries. The problems, which the author culled from numerous sources cited in his footnotes, are well-chosen and interesting. Jacobs uses the problems to teach the reader concepts not covered in his exposition. However, despite beginning the text with a discussion of inductive and deductive reasoning, Jacobs does not teach the reader how to write proofs. In most of the proofs in the problem sets, the statements are given and the reader is required only to provide the reasons for the statements. There are few opportunities for the reader to write an original proof. Therefore, I recommend the book as a supplement rather than a text.
