Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Far away in the high mountains lives a mighty dragon. He can fly higher than the clouds and faster than the birds. His fiery breath, his monstrous wings, and his mighty sweeping tail strike fear into the lives of all around. Brave armies try to protect the castle to no avail. The evil dragon snatches the beautiful princess in his powerful claw and flies off to make her captive in his skeleton-strewn cave. But this mighty dragon has one, very well-hidden, secret. He is afraid of mice. When a mouse named George moves into the neighboring cave, he knows nothing about the dragon. He wants only to live a simple life and enjoy some tea with his cheese. Alas, he has forgotten to pack sugar in his small suitcase. He decides to step next door to borrow some. When the dragon spots George on his doorstep, he screams as though he has been stabbed and drops the princess into the sand. He flies away as quickly as his huge wings will take him. The princess invites George to accompany her back to the castle for tea, complete with two lumps of sugar and other delicious goodies. Then she sets him up with his own hole in the castle wall. The dragon never dares come near again. Illustrations of an enormous red dragon fill most of the pages and depict the action of the story. The minimal text is in a large font and is quite repetitious, which encourages young children to read along. 2006, Knopf, Ages 5 to 9.

I just finished reading this book to my 6-year-old as a good night story for the 100th time. It is just great. The illustrations are wonderful, the story is written in a very apt way. Only a few lines per page, very powerful. By the way, there are two storylines one of which is nog mentioned in the text, it can only be read in the illustrations. Never seen that one before! If I could -it is currently not available in dutch- I would buy a copy for each and every friend of my children. It is just marvellous.
