A glimpse of what love can be...

No one knows you better than the person you love so much that you wonder how or if you'll survive if they leave the planet. That's how Sally Wade knew George Carlin, and he knew her. Fortunately they documented their intimate, creative relationship in a passionate flow of cards, artwork, photos, notes, scribbles and squiggles, written from across the country or from the next room.

I love this book because it shows what can happen if you find the love of your life--like maybe the planet really does do a somersault and toss you out to the stars. In fact, Geo was so in love with Sal, and she with him, that they decided early on that they both must be from another world, and when you see what they had going on, maybe that's true. After all, Carlin's genius was coming up with takes on this planet's customs and institutions that might have come from an ET with an IQ off the chart--and it's fun to see how Sally matches him every step of the way.

This book makes you hungry for love. I mean, when was the last time someone told you, as Geo wrote Sal, "Next to you, the sun is like a match, ten thousand miles away. You make my life that bright." It's not all roses, though, and Sally holds nothing back, giving us the most intimate glimpse of Carlin the world has seen. Each bit of text or artwork freezes some kind of intense emotion, and perhaps, in this edgy narrative of their love, the greater message is that love can transform everyday moments into bursts of magic. Fortunately, George and Sally conspired to document how this happens for all to see.

The George Carlin Letters, The Permanent Courtship of Sally Wade.

I began reading this book like many fans thinking I knew all there was to no about George Carlin. A man I have admired for his straight forward look on life. George's persona was larger than life and almost impenetrable. That was until the day he encountered the lovely Miss Sally Wade. Never again would his life be the same. Sally may have stolen his heart, but in turn, she gave him the most exciting and love filled years of his life.
I want to thank Sally personally for giving us a look into their lives and leaving us with the hope that it's never too late to find true love. I wholeheartedly recommend this as a must read.

    One Of A Kind!

Sally Wade, his widow, is sharing a side of George that we otherwise would never know. She is also sharing a love we all wish we had. This is a very endearing book and I couldn't put it down.

George Carlin was not only a terrific comedian on stage but a very loving person off stage. The notes, illustrations and endearing comments between George and Sally had me laughing, crying and wanting to know more. We hardly, if ever, get to see inside the person who walks the stage for a living. I feel like I truly know George Carlin now like I never did before.

Geo was once quoted as saying "One of my biggest fears -- the most difficult area of my existence -- has always been unleashing my feelings". In the Permanent Courtship, he has so humorously and touchingly done just that.

I want to thank Sally Wade for letting us into her private life with George and letting us see what the "real" George and Sally had. This is a love story like no other. The book is something you can read over and over again.

Must read. Funny, witty, loving, irreverent, just plain enjoyable.

I love this book. It gives an a look into a very special love; one most of us only dream of having. It's also funny and irreverent. It gives a sweet and charming look at a man who was famous for his naughty words and his appearance in some pretty excellent movies, but who has rarely been seen as a gentle soul. It's a fun read, too. There is a bit of a scrapbook feel, and it's as if one has been allowed into a very private life. A great read. A MUST read!
