Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
The "Pebble Plus Presidential Biographies" series aims to acquaint beginning readers with the lives of our national leaders. Each large book presents a handsome portrait of its subject on the cover, offers a page or two of "Early Life," and a section called "Young Adult." Each ends with a brief summary of the president's accomplishments and a "Remembering" spread for presidents who have died. Bush's life and presidency were well documented by photographers and television, so illustrations here are mostly color photos showing Bush at various stages of his career. Most interesting are photos of three-year-old George as a Texas cowboy and a snap of him in Little League uniform. The rest show a smiling president or a grimly determined Bush in the wake of 9/11. The simple text is upbeat but rudimentary—it takes kids at a gallop through marriage, Texas politics, the presidency, and invading Iraq. It is hard to evaluate a still-living president—the author does not try, but concludes that Bush is remembered for "how he helped the nation through its worst terrorist attack." Nothing at all is said of many extremely controversial policies, even if readers this young could understand the issues (or for older readers who might). The result is a bland and boring volume that gives a false impression of Bush's legacy. A note to parents and teachers warns that readers will need help. Though a glossary attempts to explain unfamiliar concepts, what can readers in kindergarten or first-grade make of campaign or terrorist? Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft

Meet the Author

Sally Lee is the author of numerous nonfiction books for readers from kindergarten through high school. Her interest in children’s literature began at the University of Missouri where she received her degree in education. Her years of teaching gave her desire to help children learn.
When she left the classroom to raise her own son and daughter, writing nonfiction became a way to continue educating children. Her favorite part of writing nonfiction is doing research. It reminds her of a treasure hunt, especially when it uncovers off-beat facts that nobody else knows. It also satisfies her own curiosity about the world. Sally and her husband live in Dallas, Texas, with their children and grandchildren nearby.
