Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-- Each of these books opens with a fictionalized anecdote, complete with conversation, from the subjects' childhood, and then moves into a superficial account of some important events in their lives. All contain invented dialogue; all are oversimplified. The only dates mentioned are the landfalls of Columbus and the Mayflower, so readers will have no idea when the events happened or of the ages of the subjects. Neither the Declaration of Independence nor the American Revolution is named although the war is described in a general way. Priscilla Alden is pictured as being younger than her actual age at the time of the voyage of the Mayflower. The series's title suggests that these books might have information about the holidays associated with the subjects, but there is none. David Adler's George Washington: Father of Our Country (Holiday, 1988) is a better biography for this age group. The books are competently illustrated with full-color paintings, but that's not enough reason to purchase them. --Jean H. Zimmerman, Willett School, South River, NJ
