Children's Literature - Children's Literature
George Washington began life on a farm in Virginia. He came from a family of means and became a surveyor and officer in the Virginia Army. He fought on the side of the British. Eventually, the colonists wanted their freedom from Great Britain. Washington's military experience led to his appointment as Commander in Chief. After eight years of war, American won its independence and Washington retired to his home--Mount Vernon. All too soon he was called back to service and was elected the first President of the new republic. Color sketches give readers a look at the man and his time. The black-and-white photos are a bit muddy. Definitions, a short bibliography with Internet sites, and an index round out this interesting mini- biography. Part of the "Famous Americans" series. 1999, Pebble Books/Capstone, Ages 5 to 8, $13.25. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
