Children's Literature - Rosa RobertsThe first United States president is the focus of this addition to the “Rookies Biographies” series for young readers. Readers will get a sense of Washington’s important role as the founding “Father of Our Country,” as well as his accomplishments from farmer and soldier to commander in chief of the United States. His determination to free Americans from English rule is explained in a simplistic and understandable manner. Basic word choices and a simplistic sentence structure assists readers through Washington’s life and includes colorful photographs and illustrations. Also included in the 32 pages are a table of contents, captions, a timeline, a glossary, an index, “facts for now,” and additional fast facts. This book establishes the precedent for introducing readers to biographies in the library and the classroom. As a result, this biography series is an asset for a school, public, or classroom library. Other famous Americans in the series include Walt Disney, Steve Jobs, Harriet Tubman, Barack Obama, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Reviewer: Rosa Roberts; Ages 5 to 7.
School Library JournalK-Gr 4-These titles give very basic information about their subjects from birth to death. A summary ties up the data. Each spread contains one to four sentences in one to two paragraphs facing a full-color or black-and-white reproduction. In all, there are a good number of facts, succinctly written. A few words are spelled out phonetically in the texts. Although these brief biographies don't offer enough information for reports, they do have enough "meat" for curious beginning readers who have no background on these presidents.-Kathleen Simonetta, Indian Trails Public Library District, Wheeling, IL Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
