Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Andrea Sears Andrews
Readers will enjoy the persistence of young George Washington Allen as he pursues the question that no one seems to be able to answer, "What did George Washington eat for breakfast?" George, an inquisitive little boy who is constantly seeking new information about his namesake, decides he will stop at nothing to find the answer to this nagging question. He enlists the help of his entire family on this mission and together they search the library and travel to Washington D.C. and Mount Vernon. George's thorough research reveals interesting unknown details about the first president such as his foot size, love for counting, and ability to crack walnuts in his mouth. Despite George's tenacious efforts in discovering the truth about George Washington's breakfast, all of his outside research leads him nowhere. In a moment of frustration, George retreats to his attic only to find out that the truth has been in his own home all along. Although George's determination to find the truth is a bit much at times, most readers will be inspired to follow suit and pursue the unknown with spirit and resolve. The recognizable sketches of Paul Galdone accompany every page, neatly breaking up the lengthy text.
