Gr 5-8George Washington's World was first published more than 50 years ago. This expanded edition by Genevieve Foster's daughter incorporates new material, especially in the areas of women's history, African-American history, and Native American history. The purpose of the book is to present a slice of life, or picture of what the world was like during Washington's lifetime. As such, its chapters cover major periods of his life, such as when he was a boy, a soldier, a farmer, a commander, a common citizen, and president. The writing style is engaging, and the narrative, which contains unattributed dialogue, reads more like fiction than a history text. The presentation is enhanced by a generous number of pen-and-ink drawings.Marilyn Heath, Greenwood High School, SC

I read an MUCH EARLIER version of this book when I was 7. Now I am 74! George Washington's World was the first real book I read by myself. It fascinated me. I have never forgotten it. Although I did not become an historian, I have always enjoyed reading history ever since then. For example, I have just finished Peter Heather's 4 books about Rome and am now delving into his Empires and Barbarians. This is evidence that George Washington's World can produce a lifetime of pleasurable reading. I am about to buy it for my 6 year old granddaughter's birthday. I hope she likes it as much as I did!

We homeschool our children with an accredited curriculum out of California. This book was required reading. I searched our library system first and found it at a local community college. It came in an ancient (1941) hardback with yellowed pages. It was wonderful reading it with my 5th grade son and discussing the life of George Washington. The book's illustrations were entertaining as well as informative. They showed other events going on in the world at different times in GW's life. The book detailed his home life and his thoughts and desires. I am purchasing the paperback in hopes that the illustrations and content will be the same. I want my other 3 children to enjoy the same book.

George Washington's World was given to our six year old son as a Christmas present. What began as one of his two parents reading to him before bedtime has become a family affair, all four of us sitting together, listening not just to the regular retelling of George Washington's life but to WORLD history. Grouped according to the stages of his life (boy, soldier, farmer, etc.), we are appreciating the humanities approach to understanding the people/names and the effects their lives, inventions or decisions had on the world. As Americans we often fail to look beyond our own country's history - this book opens the world's history to our children.
