Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
One of many such series, Cavendish's "Cultures of the World" offers substantial coverage of multiple topics along with attractive color photos and several maps. Especially interesting in this series are the environmental chapters and others on language, lifestyles, festivals and the arts. In Georgia, readers will learn about the spectacular Caucasus mountain range dominating northern Georgia and the country's multiplicity of ethnic groups, languages and customs. Though Georgia is now an independent nation, its troubled, warlike history haunts it still, dividing the population, including peoples of three autonomous regions who would prefer independence or, as in South Ossetia, unity with Russia. Georgia has many other problems: environmental (deforestation, Black Sea pollution, atomic fallout from Chernobyl), economic (decline of trade, primitive agricultural methods, oil disputes with Russia), and social (male dominated culture, lack of basic services, growing gap between rich and poor). Despite these conditions, Georgians like to enjoy life by eating, drinking, dancing, celebrating festivals, playing sports and chess. Two notable Georgians mentioned are Josef Stalin and Nina Ananiashvili, founder of the renowned State Ballet of Georgia. (Not noted is the great Georgian-born ballet choreographer, George Balanchine.) Unfortunately, Georgia is written in a pedestrian, often awkward style, while some illustrations are unappealing and even inappropriate—a billboard claiming to show the Georgian alphabet is actually in Russian. Overall, the authors present a bleak picture of Georgian life with many unsolved problems and increasing pressure from a belligerent Russia; recent militaryaction and sabotage of bridges (2008) are not covered. Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
One in a series of 90 books designed to introduce a new culture to older primary and middle school students, Georgia covers the history, geography, government, lifestyles and more of a country that serves as a crossroads between Europe and Asia. Filled with wonderful photographs and lively text, this is a fascinating and well-researched book.
School Library Journal
Gr 6-10The geography, history, government, and the cultures of this Transcaucasian country are covered in an encyclopedic style. The positive aspect of this format is that it is easy to find information for reports. On the negative side, this volume, like others in the series, tends to include too many lists of names of places and people and too few explanations. The details of Georgia's early history, beginning with the middle Paleolithic period, will probably overwhelm most readers. While sections on the economy and lifestyle are better, the attention given to dialects of the Georgian language and minority religions will not hold the interest of many readers. The many full-color photographs are good, but there are a few mistakes in captions. The port of Batumi is described as "near the Soviet border with Turkey" and a snapshot of two billboards, one in Georgian and the other in Russian, is captioned, "Georgian text outside a cinema," leaving readers to guess which is in Georgian. The unannotated bibliography ranges from Michael Boyette's Soviet Georgia (Chelsea House, 1989), written for children, to Ronald Suny's The Making of the Georgian Nation (Indiana Univ. Pr., 1994), a scholar's history for college students. For middle school students, Georgia (Lerner, 1993) has a more coherent and readable text.Elizabeth Talbot, University of Illinois, Champaign
