Geothermal (GHP) air conditioning is an old technology has been around since the 1940's. The first successful commercial project was installed in the Commonwealth Building (Portland, Oregon) in 1946, and has been designated a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark by ASME. What is amazing is that this green technology has been around for this long. This book will tell you about a renewable source that has the lowest cost per kWH of any distributed thermal technology. Which I find amazing. Energy costs are going to keep climbing year after year. The Geothermal Heat pump (GHP) will allow you to heat or cool your home for pennies on the dollar. This is not voodoo science but real world green savings. The author of this book Jay Egg and his company Egg Systems has been installing Geothermal Air Conditioning for 20 years. If you have any interest in geothermal heat pumps (GHP) be it that you are a contractor, home owner or just a "Green" thumb i would pick this book up.
Geothermal air conditioning has been proven to be the most dependable and energy efficient cooling and heating technology in the world. When properly engineered and installed, this heat pump technology is a remarkably solid renewable source that has the lowest cost per kWH of any distributed thermal technology. This book seeks to, and truly does standardize many of the concerns for geothermal air conditioning and heat pumps that are still troubling the minds of those seeking to understand the merits and incredible possibilities. As in Sweden and Switzerland, Geothermal HVAC systems are well on their way to replacing all other types of cooling and heating. As a disruptive technology, geothermal air conditioning is likely to become a minimum standard sometime in the near future. A few weeks ago I had a chance to meet with Jay Egg, the writer of this book. We talked about replacing my current system with a geothermal unit and the options associated with it. Unlike the competitors in the area (and there aren't many), he didn't just get on the geothermal AC band-wagon. He's been installing geothermal HVAC for 20 years in commercial and residential applications. I've been looking at installing a geothermal ac system in my house for quite sometime and thought myself to be educated. While I was right on my basic understanding, he truly showed me his expertise on the efficiency comparison of different types of systems, specifically open loop v.s. closed loop systems. He showed me how thermal retention is a big problem and how the ground where closed loops are installed can heat up over a period of years and cause the unit to become dramatically less efficient overtime. The amount of time he spent on educating me and not selling me was amazing. I can't wait to see what has been laid out for us in this book!
This book seems geared towards a DIY level of the concepts. For that it is adequate. For those looking for a solid reference textbook on the design aspects of geothermal HVAC, you will be disappointed.
I just got through scanning through a copy of geothermal hvac...just reading the captions for the illustrations taught me more in a couple of hours than I've learned in the past 30 years. I finally understand why geothermal heating works so well. Great job to McGraw-Hill and the author.
