Description: This book is designed as an all-encompassing resource and reference for nutrition professionals who work with older adults. The previous edition was published in 2006, so this update is very much needed to include all the current research and recommendations.
Purpose: As stated in the preface, the book is to be used to study for the certification examination for dietitians in gerontological nutrition. For dietitians attempting to obtain that certification, it seems like a worthy objective.
Audience: It is written primarily for dietitians, but could be used as a reference by anyone who works with the elderly. It seems most appropriate for dietitians with a higher level of knowledge in the area of geriatrics, not necessarily entry-level dietitians.
Features: This book covers all aspects of nutrition care in geriatrics, including a comprehensive review of nutrient and micronutrient requirements, drug interactions, physical activity and nutrition needs, as well as aging and the kidney, heart, endocrine system, and skeleton, to name a few topics. Each chapter includes an introduction, recent research, recommendations, and an expansive reference section. The chapter on endocrine aspects of nutrition and aging includes information on diabetes, but references only the 2004 recommendations, not the 2008 position statement on nutrition (the only recent information available at the time of publication) or the 2013 Clinical Practice Recommendations, making this chapter a little outdated. This chapter also denoted type 2 diabetes as type II, which has not been used for several years. The chapter covering the continuum of nutrition services for older Americans does an excellent job of discussing the available federally funded programs. It also includes an excellent table of articles covering diet-related health recommendations and aging, which would be useful for nutrition professionals.
Assessment: The book is written at an appropriate level for more experienced dietitians taking the certification exam for geriatrics, and it can be a useful reference for all registered dietitians working in geriatrics. It may not be appropriate for students or other entry-level healthcare professionals.
