Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: David O. Staats, MD (University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center)
Description: This is an updated edition of a book published about three years ago which is a synopsis or precis of geriatric medicine. It is intended to cover subjects likely to come up during teaching rounds.
Purpose: Its purpose is to provide a concise summary of the main facts of geriatric medicine. Indeed, the subjects covered are the main ones facing those who care for older persons. Some of the facts are painted with a broad brush and others presuppose a certain level of knowledge on the part of the reader.
Audience: The authors, mostly from the University of Pennsylvania, are credible authorities in geriatric medicine. This book is written at the level of medical students, medical rtesidents, and fellows in geriatric medicine.
Features: New to this edition are chapters on healthcare systems. Discussions of perioperative management and assessment are particularly thorough.
Assessment: I like this second edition even more than the first edition. The feedback and revisions have created a work that hangs in a more coherent fashion. In the way that one gains more by discussing an article read by a group than simply assigning its reading, a discussion of the facts and opinions presented in this work may provide a better understaning of the points covered than by merely reading them. This book provides a lot of information in a compact space.

Written in a question and answer format, these 57 chapters overview the salient issues encountered in the practice of geriatrics. The second edition adds a section that deals with health systems and alternative sites of care, as well as chapters on osteoporosis, anticoagulation, dehydration, and incontinence. Annotation c.
