Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: David O. Staats, MD (University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center)
Description: This little book is a pocket-sized reference on geriatric medicine that provides a concise source of current guidelines, assessment tools, diagnostic approaches and therapeutics.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide medical students, residents, fellows, practicing geriatricians, and those caring for older persons with a concise guideline to treating older persons. It incorporates other well known guidelines. The American Geriatrics Society has hit a home run in developing this little book.
Audience: Every level of physician, student to advanced geriatrician, benefits from access to this book. Distilled and crafted by experts in the field, this book comes close to enunciating a "party line" in geriatric medicine.
Features: Every aspect of caring for older persons is covered. Its diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms, its tables of drugs, its compendium of assessment forms (and their administration), and its tabulation of various regulations all in one place make it an exceptionally useful reference. That it fits into your pocket in hardback, not digital format, is a tour de force.
Assessment: The utility of this book continues to grow. As more guidelines and algorithms and best practice patterns emerge, this book also summarizes the best thinking in current geriatric medicine. Priced less than a bottle of good gin, it is worth much more. It is one of the great educational values in geriatric medicine today.
