Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Michael Wasserman, MD (Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description: This is a patient's guide to pediatric infectious disease, providing an understanding of the causes, prevention, and treatment of children's infections.
Purpose: The book is intended as a home reference for parents. The objectives are worthy, as the author is attempting to explain basic concepts to parents, while providing clear understanding of these principles.
Audience: "The book is aimed at the lay public. It is not designed for practitioners. "
Features: Information on microorganisms and the diseases they cause is presented. Prevention and treatment of infectious disease are also covered. Further, the author addresses numerous "momisms" such as "why do children need more sleep when they're sick?"
Assessment: The scientific information presented is clear, concise, and appropriately written for the lay public. Scientific studies are referenced and explained clearly. In those circumstances where the author is near the fringe of conventional medical wisdom, he explains his thinking in an understandable fashion. There are many self-help books for parents regarding all aspects of child care, including treatment of illnesses. This one is unique in its concentration on prevention and treatment of infectious diseases.
