Meet the Author


Richard Panchyk is the author of 12 books and dozens of articles. His family left Germany for New York in 1866, and he has been studying German immigrants in New York City since 1992. Using photographs culled from his extensive collection of images and from the Library of Congress, the author offers a closer look at the German American experience in New York City.

    Remembering my roots

    If you grew up in NYC and German this is a nice historical book on the life of Germans. MY only thing I just hoped they would have done more research and more information on the Gottscheers(which I am). A great gift idea as well. I love all the Images of America series books.

    German New York City, New York (Images of America Series)

    Overall I would give the research, photos and background stories very good marks.
    However, having been actively engaged in the German-American community in the Glendale/Ridgewood neighborhoods in the 40's, 50's and 60's and having heard stories from my parents of their experiences in the late 20's and 30's of Ridgewood, my impression is that so much was left out that would have given a more balanced and impartial history of what German Ridgewood was like. For example, there was no emphasis on the vast influx of German youth that came here in the mid 50's through the mid 60's; all the German owned beauty parlors, deli businesses, a bar & grill on every other corner, and, of course, the famous Schwabenhalle where every Saturday night a German club held a dance and was the meeting place for all those German immigrants. There was too much emphasis on one or two families and reading about them did not give me the impression that they were necessarily representative of the majority of the Germans living in Ridgewood.
    I would consider the book very interesting to the general readership interested in German New York City, but for those of us who remember Ridgewood from first hand and personal experiences far too much was left out. I got the impression that the writer's research into the background for Ridgewood was limited to interviewing one or two families to which he has a personal connection.
    The content that was presented, however, was very good.
