Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
Part of a lively series about world costume, this book explores both German folk costume and modern dress, including fashion houses, sportswear (Germans are fit and love outdoor sports), and specialized clothing for youth, cults, ceremonies, and work. Senker makes a distinction between Tracht, traditional costume that has stayed the same for centuries, and modern folk costume, adapted to current fashion (in some areas like Bavaria, dirndls and lederhosen are worn on the street). Fashion addicts will enjoy photos of trendy outfits for both men and women from houses like Hugo Boss and Strenesse, though neither Karl Lagerfeld nor Jil Sander is mentioned. Especially striking are two gorgeous printed silk dresses in browns and oranges from Tuzzi. Numerous photos show folk dress from regions like the Black Forest (hats with huge red pompoms), while even guys might enjoy seeing the black-and-white uniforms of Germany's soccer team or the green outfits worn by motorcycle polizei (with green motorcycles, too). Senker stresses that most prosperous Germans wear pretty much what the rest of Europe is wearing, influenced by French, Italian, and American designers. Muslim women in Germany like to dress up, too, though more modestly, often matching their headscarves to the rest of a colorful ensemble. Chic sports outfits are very popular, especially among professional athletes, with manufacturers like Adidas and Willy Bogner leading the way. Relating trends in costume to history, geography, and international influences, this colorful treatise will be fun and useful for fashionistas and future designers alike. Reviewer: Barbara L.
