Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Melissa Rife
Nazis, sausages, and pretzels: these are usually some of the few things that students know about Germany. With this nonfiction book, however, they are informed about a large number of aspects of German culture. Beginning with geographic and historical information, the authors teach about everything from the language, the arts, the food, and the leisure activities of the country. Using large print and numerous pictures, the book communicates an elementary-level of information that pulls the reader in. Although extensive in the topics covered, the information is, in fact, very basic. While a student using this book could do a great report on the overall state of Germany, they would have to do further research to go into much depth on any one topic. For example, the names of the different types of schools in Germany are listed, but no details about their differences or what happens in each. Because of that rudimentary-level of information, this book is best suited for someone younger, between fourth and sixth grade. Throughout the book, key words are highlighted and defined in the glossary at the end of the book. These include phrases such as European Union and German words such as autobahn. Also included in the book is a table of contents to easily locate different topics, a map in the back, a fact sheet that lays out the basic facts about the country, such as capital and population, and an index of German terms, names, and events. Finally, the book includes a bibliography and Internet web site list for further research. All in all, this is a great elementary presentation about life in Germany. The only issue is that some of the pictures are outdated and may give a slightly false representation of the dress of the everyday German. Part of the "Welcome to My Country" series.
