Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
What are germs? How do they make us sick? The "Follow It" series answers these and other questions by taking young readers on an animated trip that follows some familiar objects or organisms through their lifecycles. In this book, gleeful olive-green germs introduce kids to germ theory. It all starts with a cold in the nose. When Rudy sneezes, invisible germs in his nose parachute down to every surface in his classroom. The kids learn that keeping food wrapped and washing fruit before eating it can help keep germs away. Since some germs land on a classroom computer, Chip picks up the nasty critters and begins to contaminate everything he touches. The cycle continues as Jared types at the keyboard and then rubs his eyes, bites his fingernails, and picks his nose. Ugh! The evil germs are in Jared's nose; before long, he too will have a terrible cold. Germs keep traveling as kids on the school bus cough and yawn. Then they transport the germs to after-school activities like dance class, a ball game, or piano lessons. Since Jared will fly to Ohio over the weekend, the clever germs are packing for the flight. Trimmer's sharp cartoon-style illustrations in mixed media help keep the trip lively, while sidebars offer more facts about germs (e.g., there are more germs on computer keys than on a toilet seat) and how they travel (e.g., washing hands is the best way to keep germs from spreading). In case the journey is a bit confusing, a diagram at the end traces it with simple icons. Also helpful are a glossary, a list of three books, and a list of related websites, only one of which is appropriate for this audience. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
