Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
All living things have a lot in common, according to Gertrude, the slimy, smelly and happy monster. Part of a new series of picture books that uses a fictitious narrative to describe basic science, this book focuses on the difference between living and non-living entities. This is my favorite of the series. The monsters are fun, and with the first few sentences, Braun sets them up as believable sparing partners: "Gertrude prefers funny books, while Reginald likes serious ones. Gertrude loves candy corn smoothies. Reginald is into salads. They are both Monsters, but Reginald doesn't like that word. ?It's rude!' he says." As Gertrude walks Reginald through the basics, we watch them looking at the real world. The living things the pair discusses are normal plants and animals, while the non-living things are scooters and rocks. Readers will enjoy the fun pictures and have no problem carrying the information about living and non-living back into their own world. Backmatter for the book includes a glossary, lists for further reading, Internet Sites via FactHound—a Capstone site that promises to keep the links safe—and an index. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
