Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-- As in The Robbery at the Diamond Dog Diner (Clarion, 1986) and Glenda Feathers Casts a Spell (Houghton, 1990), Christelow creates a picture book adventure with humor, a straightforward plot with clues that young children can easily spot, and colorful illustrations that feature animals with distinct personalities. Gertrude B. Dog likes to read mysteries so much that she decides to become a detective. However, this does not sit well with her neighbors, Roger and Mabel, because she hones her skills by investigating them. To curtail her snooping, they plant false clues; their scheme backfires when she follows the clues, discovers a real crime, and ingeniously nabs the criminals. The bright gouache and watercolor crayon illustrations may not work for preschool story hours because of the many small details, but primary graders will appreciate the humor and love the detective angle. Christelow's : books can be considered as precursors to Quackenbush's ``Miss Mallard'' and ``Detective Mole'' books for slightly older readers. An entertaining entry with a nice twist at the end.-- Judy Constantinides, East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library , LA
