Get Liftedby John Legend
If you've listened to Top 40 radio or flipped through the video channels during the past few years, odds are pretty good you know something about John Legend. He played piano on Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything" and might as well be considered Kanye West's sidekick, having assisted the producer and MC on several sessions -- Jay-Z's "Encore" and Slum Village's "Selfish" being two of the more prominent 2004 singles featuring his work. A former choir director, he has also released a handful of energetic live discs, some of which are credited to his less hubristic birth name, John Stephens. And though he claims "I've got something new," you've also heard substantial chunks of Get Lifted in records made decades ago by Sly & the Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield, Quincy Jones, and Bill Withers. This might not be a problem for listeners who crave anything that recalls the music they first heard in their youth, but Legend's over-reliance upon his inspirations is an impediment as much as a slick way to grab attention. That's because he has more than enough talent and charm to get by on his own. His own lyrics and hooks are unique and clever enough to get the point across that he's no everyday R&B artist and, just as importantly, he has a personable and instantly fetching voice you could listen to all day long. However, the association with West -- whose Sony-distributed boutique label released the record -- is very helpful. Without it, Legend would likely be zoned into neo-soul (2003's Live at SOB's New York City really makes this notion apparent), thereby standing little chance of reaching the ears of anyone younger than 30. The production work supporting his songs strikes a fine balance between soul and hip-hop, allowing him to appeal to those who are coming from either angle. This is a very good record. It's a given that Legend is destined to make at least two others that top it.

John Legend's CD "Get Lifted" is an absolute gem!!! I can listen to this CD without skipping any tracks!! I look forward to John Legend having longevity in the R&B music business. Definitely quality R&B music worth buying. Get this CD!!!
Months ago when I heard the 1st few chords of 'Used to Love You' I was leaping with joy at the purity of the voice that came pouring into my car! John Legend is a perfect example of what raw talent is. This guy is the real deal, No wonder he's been behind the scenes for so long! Other artists wanted him all to themselves! I'm so happy this album is finally out and I only pray that John stays this way. "Real music from real musicians" as Prince always says. I know for sure that Prince is listening...Keep it up John!
John Legend may have slipped under mainstream media's radar, but his debut CD "Get Lifted" is a definite classic! This is one of those CDs that you can put on and just let it play all the way through. John doesn't rely on a cast of super-producers and beat-driven material; instead, he gives us songs with meaningful lyrics that showcase the best of who he is. Some of my favorites are "Ordinary People," "She Don't Have to Know," and "Get Lifted." I first became hooked on John earlier in the summer after downloading some of his music. His voice is so raw and filled with emotion that you can't help but want to hear more. "Get Lifted" shows that John isn't just an artist that's great for singing background "hooks" or playing the piano, he is a true musician in every sense. This CD will not disappoint you--promise. Also, if you ever have an opportunity to see him perform live, please go! His live performances are even better than his studio material (just when you thought it couldn't get any better, right?).
John Legend has turned me into an instant fan. All the songs are tight and several of them are always repeated on my stereo, especially #2-Get Lifted and #5-She Don't Have to Know. GO GET THIS CD!!
This cd is so good. It is much better than the r&b heard on the radio now a days. You can tell that John Legend is an all around musician. The cd is so good I'm going to buy the dual disc version that comes out in June. This is definitely a good buy.
I first heard this guy on his music video for "Used to love U". Not only does he have the voice, he also has a good dynamic with kanye west and snoop dogg. Hearing him, he's now not just "kanye west's new guy", he's now "john legend". He's come out of the shadows and isn't just a backround man for west.
This is by far one of the best cd's i've heard in months. It is not what you'd typically hear on the radio nowadays. But it has everything, ballads, jams, gospel inspired songs. I started listening to it a week ago and cannot stop. Definitely a classic!
John Legend has a voice that is impossible to dismiss. He will cause you to stop dead in your tracks. If the music itself doesn't perk your ears up, the lyrics definately will. I highly recommend this cd to hard to please people that are looking for a mix between old and new.
This cd had so much buzz around it, I was really anxious to hear it. I was not dissapointed....,raw- emotional, non studio enhanced voice, insightful lyrics and great hooks...absoulute favorite...Ordinary People
I have not heard this guys cd yet, but i did hear him sing on tv a tribute to Smokie Robinson a few weeks ago, and i could not believe my ears! I thought who is the man and where did he come from,i am in love with this brother. Not only can he sing, he can play the heck out of that piano too. So i have decided to go pick up the cd because i already know its a winner.
I expected so much more after all the hoopla about John Legend. This CD is mediocre..I listen to the last 5-6 songs because they are the only decent ones. If you like the song "Ordinary People" don't expect this entire cd to be at that level of quality. The lyrics don't flow well with the music...his voice is half good. I don't need smooth vocals but his image, music and lyrics seem to be all over the place. I recommend you listen to the songs on BN.com first. Music is subjective.
Ok, I heard John Legend sing at the We Are One celebration at the Washington Mall and fell in love with this man's voice. So, when I saw this CD on sale I was really excited about getting some of Legends music and the description led me to believe it was a good example of his work. I was very disappointed with both style and content. I don't know who I would recommend this CD to, I but it in the box with the other music and books going to the resale shop. I wish I could give a better review because I still love the guy's voice.
true passion and honesty in his voice, down to earth lyrics....can't wait for the album
I am way passed impressed with the talents of John Legend. We've been waiting a long time for a new R&B artist who's this versatile and who can effectively blend the new with the old. I hope he will be 'A Legend'
makes you fell good that someone with talent to really sing wants to put out an album(unlike deangelo)and makes it easy to wait on maxwell(where is he?)and remember when songs werent all about explicit sex and it was okay to love someone.
John Legend stepped up to the plateau on this CD. Every tract oozed smoothly into the next perfect compositon. Very captivating a must have for your collection.
John legends smooth voice and falsetto tones are very amazing. He knows how to make a great cd. I cant wait for the next one to come out.His voice is powerful, just what the music industry needs today.
Okay, I'm a 40 year old white woman, who does not know the names of most of the current popular stars. I saw this guy on VH-1 and he stopped me in my tracks. I ordered this CD and it is AMAZING!! This guy is great!! Where did he come from?
I heard the fist note of "Used to Love U" and my soul leaped with joy. This is the voice of a gifted man. He processes a quiet brilliance that shines in every song. Bravo John. Well done, my brotha.
This is an amazing CD that i will not forget and will be listening for years to come. My favorite song on the album is Ordinary People becuz of th message and the simplicity of the track, just John, his piano and his amazing voice. truly amazing
I cannot wait for this CD to release. His lyrics are so real and they will pierce through your heart and soul. This is real music!! Don't sleep on this brotha!
I first heard of this man last summer and was lucky enough to see him perform with Kanye at a club in San Francisco. I kept up with him and got to catch his own show in the city last month. Let's just say not only does he fail to disappoint live, he also fails to do so on Get Lifted. There's nobody else that can do what he does, how he does it. Get it if you ain't got it.
This cd, has one great song after the other. You can actually hear him begin as a player, a young guy running around. Then he slowly makes his transition to a one woman man. I love this cd.
I first heard John Legend inside at the hair salon I told my beautician I have to get that cd. Once I purchased the cd I can;t never stop listening to him. Keep up the Good Work!
i have been following this guy since he first joined Kayne on a few remix's and underground cuts. His cd, is INCREDIBLE, thought provoking, and just down right great!
