All Music Guide - Andy Kellman
If you've listened to Top 40 radio or flipped through the video channels during the past few years, odds are pretty good you know something about John Legend. He played piano on Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything" and might as well be considered Kanye West's sidekick, having assisted the producer and MC on several sessions -- Jay-Z's "Encore" and Slum Village's "Selfish" being two of the more prominent 2004 singles featuring his work. A former choir director, he has also released a handful of energetic live discs, some of which are credited to his less hubristic birth name, John Stephens.
And though he claims "I've got something new," you've also heard substantial chunks of Get Lifted in records made decades ago by Sly & the Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield, Quincy Jones, and Bill Withers. This might not be a problem for listeners who crave anything that recalls the music they first heard in their youth, but Legend's over-reliance upon his inspirations is an impediment as much as a slick way to grab attention. That's because he has more than enough talent and charm to get by on his own. His own lyrics and hooks are unique and clever enough to get the point across that he's no everyday R&B artist and, just as importantly, he has a personable and instantly fetching voice you could listen to all day long. However, the association with West -- whose Sony-distributed boutique label released the record -- is very helpful. Without it, Legend would likely be zoned into neo-soul 2003's Live at SOB's New York City really makes this notion apparent, thereby standing little chance of reaching the ears of anyone younger than 30. The production work supporting his songs strikes a fine balance between soul and hip-hop, allowing him to appeal to those who are coming from either angle. This is a very good record. It's a given that Legend is destined to make at least two others that top it.

    Not Lifted!

Ok, I heard John Legend sing at the We Are One celebration at the Washington Mall and fell in love with this man's voice. So, when I saw this CD on sale I was really excited about getting some of Legends music and the description led me to believe it was a good example of his work. I was very disappointed with both style and content. I don't know who I would recommend this CD to, I but it in the box with the other music and books going to the resale shop. I wish I could give a better review because I still love the guy's voice.

    Buy it!

Buy this cd! its good and you can listen to most, if not all of it with the whole family. John Legend is like a male Alicia Keys: he can sing and play the pianao. He has Featured artists. Hes has anywhere from break up songs to family to love songs. This music is real.

    Amazing

This cd is so good. It is much better than the r&b heard on the radio now a days. You can tell that John Legend is an all around musician. The cd is so good I'm going to buy the dual disc version that comes out in June. This is definitely a good buy.

I LOVE THIS AND I'M AN OLD WHITE LADY!

Okay, I'm a 40 year old white woman, who does not know the names of most of the current popular stars. I saw this guy on VH-1 and he stopped me in my tracks. I ordered this CD and it is AMAZING!! This guy is great!! Where did he come from?

    Disappointed

I expected so much more after all the hoopla about John Legend. This CD is mediocre..I listen to the last 5-6 songs because they are the only decent ones. If you like the song "Ordinary People" don't expect this entire cd to be at that level of quality. The lyrics don't flow well with the music...his voice is half good. I don't need smooth vocals but his image, music and lyrics seem to be all over the place. I recommend you listen to the songs on BN.com first. Music is subjective.

    incredible talent

This cd, has one great song after the other. You can actually hear him begin as a player, a young guy running around. Then he slowly makes his transition to a one woman man. I love this cd.

The Best CD I've Heard in Ages!!

This is by far one of the best cd's i've heard in months. It is not what you'd typically hear on the radio nowadays. But it has everything, ballads, jams, gospel inspired songs. I started listening to it a week ago and cannot stop. Definitely a classic!

    Impressive

I am way passed impressed with the talents of John Legend. We've been waiting a long time for a new R&B artist who's this versatile and who can effectively blend the new with the old. I hope he will be 'A Legend'

    Awsome new artist

John Legend stepped up to the plateau on this CD. Every tract oozed smoothly into the next perfect compositon. Very captivating a must have for your collection.

For Those Who Are Hard To Please...

John Legend has a voice that is impossible to dismiss. He will cause you to stop dead in your tracks. If the music itself doesn't perk your ears up, the lyrics definately will. I highly recommend this cd to hard to please people that are looking for a mix between old and new.

    Voice of Reason Amonst Confusion

I heard the fist note of "Used to Love U" and my soul leaped with joy. This is the voice of a gifted man. He processes a quiet brilliance that shines in every song. Bravo John. Well done, my brotha.

    Out of the shadows

I first heard this guy on his music video for "Used to love U". Not only does he have the voice, he also has a good dynamic with kanye west and snoop dogg. Hearing him, he's now not just "kanye west's new guy", he's now "john legend". He's come out of the shadows and isn't just a backround man for west.
