Overview

A practical guide to help workers and managers deal with the self-sabotage that stands in the way of career advancement and satisfaction.

Self-defeating behavior is the most common reason that people put their jobs, careers, and reputations in jeopardy. Whether it's as simple as a breach of etiquette or a fear of learning new things, expecting too much from employers or failure to delegate, these behaviors lead to frustration, confusion, guilt, defensiveness, and self-doubt that will seriously hurt or even derail a career, no matter how intelligent or qualified a person might be.

Get Out of Your Own Way at Work covers forty of the most common self-defeating behaviors, explains why we sabotage ourselves, and offers proven steps to transform behavior from self-defeating to life-enhancing.

Illustrated with anecdotes and "useable insights" drawn from Dr. Goulston's more than twenty years in clinical and organization settings, Get Out of Your Own Way at Work shows anyone how to stop being their own worst enemy.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Do you find yourself getting defensive or not listening? Do you set your expectations too low? Psychiatrist Goulston (Six Secrets of a Lasting Relationship) draws on his counseling experiences to help readers identify 40 common behaviors that hinder their own job performance and careers as well as those of the people they manage. For each behavior, the author outlines the problem with real-world illustrations and offers action steps for changing it. "People pleasing" and "expecting your boss to appreciate you" sound perfectly human. But Goulston shows how these behaviors get folks into trouble in the workplace.; he offers more positive approaches. Recommended for public library business collections. Strategic Insight

As a career Marine Corps officer I have a special appreciation for tight writing and meaningful charts. If I had seen Dr. Ghoulston's charts, 'Where Self-Defeating Behavior Starts' and 'How Self-Defeating Behavior Develops' and read the brief explanations of them it would have profoundly changed the way I dealt with young Marines AND raised my children: both for the better! If we define strategy as the 'art of getting where you want to go' then Dr. Ghoulston provides a brilliant strategy for getting where we all want to go-- a more fulfilled life.

    Peter Drucker was right!

Peter Drucker has said that 'Half of the leaders that I have met don't need to learn what to DO - they need to learn what to STOP! 'Get Out of Your Own Way at Work' gives us some great guidelines on what to stop and, more importantly, great suggestions on how to improve!
