Overview

Get Over the Rainbow: why everyone should fight for gay rights is a controversial book that will further ignite the debate over gay rights and gay marriage. Written from the perspective of a straight male, Scott Redmond makes it difficult for anyone to conclude that homosexuals do not deserve total equality.

Some parts of Get Over the Rainbow were being written just as the gay marriage issue was exploding, demonstrating that Redmond's journeys through the legal, religious and social arguments against opposition to gay marriage are right on target. Redmond uses the issue of gay rights to explain the nature of news and the impact of entertainment and right-wing talk radio on America.

Get Over the Rainbow challenges those opposing gay marriage and reinforces those in support.

Straight Talk from a Straight Guy about Gay Issues

For some people, Get Over the Rainbow is preaching to the choir. For others, the book presents sound arguments for supporting gay rights. GOTR denounces any other position as discriminatory. Redmond posits that gay marriage is on the horizon despite conservative backlash by people who wish to govern society with their religious beliefs. He argues (from a straight man's perspective) that gays are asking for equal rights, rather than special rights as the bible thumpers would have everyone believe, and that a constitutional amendment designed specifically to deny certain rights to certain individuals sets a frightening precedent for our country. I enjoy the author's optimism about his subject matter. I'm sure like-minded individuals will agree with his stance. Those on the fence in regards to gay rights will probably get the most out of this book. Those completely against equal rights for gay people will probably not open this book as that would require them to open their minds. I would recommend this book to parents of gays who may be having trouble coming to terms with having a gay child. I would recommend it to anyone trying to understand the gay rights movement. As a gay man, this book just reaffirms what I already thought. As Martha Stewart would say, 'And that's a good thing!'
