Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Bruce Adelson
Jessenia wasn't just a rookie on her school's swim team-she was also going to be swimming in her first meet at a rival team's pool. Fortunately, she and the team were accompanied on the school bus by Luis, her younger brother, and her mother. As the bus passes by the extravagant homes in the rival school's neighborhood, Jessenia doubts her abilities, wondering how she and her team can compete against the girls who live in these houses. Her mother softly comforts her, telling Jessenia stories of her childhood in Puerto Rico. Jessenia's nervousness continues in the water as she narrowly loses her first race. But she recovers and races to victory in her second heat. Newly imbued with confidence, Jessenia has an inspiring message for her team's rival as she is about to board the school bus for the trip home-'We'll be back.' This attractive, well-illustrated book is a highly commendable choice for schools and libraries for its multicultural and multi-racial characters and orientation.

Gr 1-4A winning story of competition, perseverance, and pride in accomplishment. Jessenia's swim team is slated for its first away meet and she's nervous. Accompanying the girls on the bus, Jessenia's mother reminisces about her homeland of Puerto Rico, its brilliant blue skies, the expansiveness of the ocean. During her first competition, Jessenia loses concentration when she recalls her mother's comments and does not win first place. However, with her coach's encouragement and her mother's support, she finds the strength to win her last race. A gift from her mother brings her thoughts back to Puerto Rico and her heritage. With increased confidence in her abilities, Jessenia vows, "We'll be back!" The realistic, double-page watercolor-and-pencil illustrations, predominantly in warm blues and greens, depict a multicultural swim team and their African-American coach. The actions of the swimmers, the cheering crowd, and the closeness of Jessenia's family are aptly portrayed. A good choice that nicely fills the void of picture books about girls involved in team sports.Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI
Kirkus Reviews
The pure delight of sport—of pushing the body's capabilities, of moving with grace and style—takes a back seat to winning in this curious mixture of minor-league motives and big hearts from Atkins. It is Jessenia's first year on the swim team and her first meet on the opponent's turf. Her mother, an old soul from Puerto Rico who extols the simple pleasures of her childhood, and Jessenia's pranksterish brother (here for light relief) accompany her on the bus. But Jessenia's mind is on thrashing rival Weston School, an upscale community far from her urban home. Jessenia loses her first contest, then comes back to win the last race, although her school is trounced. Regardless, Jessenia is radiant and points a finger at the opposition: "We'll be back!" Atkins makes her points gently, but the story never gives testimony to Jessenia's joy in swimming, to her being part of the teamþelements that readers are expecting from the opening pages. The atmospheric hints and half-stated ideas may not be enough to compel children through the pages. (Picture book. 5-9)
