Alexandrakis (Quilting on the Go) introduces quilting basics in this appealing collection of tutorials and projects that cleverly toes the line between traditional and modern. The techniques are divided into three general categories: patchwork, appliqué, and improv, with a variety of quilt blocks representing aspects of each of the categories. For example, the patchwork section includes blocks demonstrating chain piecing, half-square and quarter-square triangles, and foundation paper piecing—typical fare for a beginning quilting book. However, Alexandrakis provides an overview of techniques that are uncommon for beginning quilting books (or quilting books in general), such as broderie perse (French for "Persian embroidery") and Japanese Ainu appliqué, giving neophytes a taste of the craft beyond the basics. A selection of small projects, as well as a twin-size sampler quilt, rounds out the package. VERDICT What this guide lacks in depth, it gains in breadth, and beginning quilters' interest will be piqued by the variety of techniques introduced.
