Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
The emphasis on standardized testing in public schools was bound to spawn a flurry of "how to" books. This middle school edition is similar to the companion book for elementary school students and their parents, but it has more emphasis on the student taking responsibility for being a successful test taker. It begins with an attitude check on studying, followed by a discussion on the importance of good health habits, such as getting enough sleep, eating properly, and exercising. The remaining seven chapters outline the tips for being a serious student such as reviewing math skills, building vocabulary, English skills reviews, and plenty of sample tests for practice. There is emphasis and practice on Document Based Questions (DBQ's) and more practice tests at the end of the book. While the emphasis is on students' taking control of their own future, parents may want to become involved to encourage their middle-schoolers to access all areas of the book. It is a great guide for teachers, as well, in the review process.
