Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Paula McMillen
This light-hearted look at the Labors of Hercules is volume VII (Roman numerals are used throughout) of the "Myth-O-Mania" series. In this version, Lord Hades of the Underworld, Hercules' uncle, provides readers with the "truthful" rendition of this saga, in contrast to the "Factually Inaccurate Bull-hooey" (F.I.B.) provided by Hades' brother Zeus (Hercules' father). Although very fond of his nephew and cognizant of Hercules' tremendous strength, Hades claims to have played no small role in Hercules' successful accomplishment of the XII Labors. Whenever wife Persephone was not at home (nine months of the year), Hades tells us that he popped up to the surface to keep a protective eye on his nephew, because he knew Hera, Zeus' wife, was "out to get the kid from the beginning." Zeus' philandering is cleaned up slightly—presumably for this younger audience—and Hercules' mother is described as one of Zeus' "former wives." There is abundant supplementary material after the story including a pronunciation guide and explanation of mythological names and creatures, a short traditional summary of the XII Labors of Hercules, an author bio, a glossary, discussion questions and writing ideas. Suitably, since this is a production of Hades, several pages are given the appearance of being scorched at the edges. This book, and presumably this series, offer engaging access to Greek mythology which might be used to compare and contrast with more traditional accounts. The discussion and writing suggestions promote critical reasoning as well as communication skills. Reviewer: Paula McMillen, Ph.D.
