Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
There is a lot to like in this latest offering by the authors of The Guerrilla Marketing Handbook. Levinson and Godin quote Jerry Seinfeld ("What is a date really, but a job interview that lasts all night?") and point out that the criteria for picking Miss America are silly. (What does wearing a bathing suit with high heels have to do with anything?) Their thesis is equally appealing: as long as people are going to make snap decisions about you, much as the judges do about Miss America, why not help them decide in your favor? Your mantra should be: "I can control the messages I send, and my life will be the better for it." The authors proceed to tell you how to do this through the way you talk, dress and behave. Unfortunately, they often use the same example twice, are partial to long, egotistical asides and repeat themselves in the appendix. The book offers a money-back guaranteefrom the authors, not Avon. That may be the best thing of all. (Sept.)

INTRODUCTION

Why You Should Bother Spending the Time

LAST YEAR, MORE THEN 10 MILLION SELF-HELP BOOKS WERE sold. An awful lot of them were bought by people with the best intentions, but the readers never followed through and implemented the ideas. Even worse, some of these books were never read.

That's not surprising. Changing your life for the better isn't easy, or everyone would do it! All too often, these books outline wonderful plans but never answer the question, "What's in it for me?" Why bother spending the time, the energy, and the resources to follow the author's advice?

This book has an audacious title. You'd all like to get what you deserve, and we believe that this book can dramatically increase the chances for your success. You're probably wondering a few things about our guerrilla marketing concept "Does it really work?"

"Is it hard?"

"How long will it take to get results?"

"Why should I invest the time and energy to do things that make me a little uncomfortable, or make me feel unnatural? "

Because it will transform your life. Because it will change the way the world treats you. Because it will make you happier.

There are two keys to success—knowing what you want and knowing how to get it. Get What You Deserve! will help you figure out what you want, but more important, it will provide you with the tools and the mind-set you'll need to succeed.

In a nutshell, this book asks and answers crucial questions:
What messages do you send?
How do you send them?
Who do you send them to?
What messages do you want to send?

Finding the answers to these questions will equip you to reexamine the way you relate to the world and what effectit has on how the world treats you.

This book won't suggest you tell people what they want to hear, but it explains how to tell them what you want them to hear. It will show you a new way of thinking about how you interact with the world that will enable you to figure out what you want and how to get it more effectively.

This is not a book about being someone you're not. It's not going to tell you how to persuade someone to hire you as president when you're really qualified to be an assistant What it is going to do is demonstrate how to represent your qualities and skills so you never get less than you deserve.

The system described here works. It works for individuals, for organizations, and for businesses. Over the last fifteen years, we have counseled literally thousands of executives, salespeople, and "people on the street" on how to use guerrilla techniques to find success. Now those secrets are available to you.

Unlike other self-help books, we don't want you to change who you are. Your basic nature is just fine the way it is. This is a book about changing how you act, how you convey your image, how you send signals.
