Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Debra Lampert-Rudman
Part of Capstone Press' "Step-by-Step Stories" series, Johnson's book teaches sequencing skills and supports math and science concepts such as ordering events. A perfect guide for the young reader who is interested in getting a pet, the book uses text and photographs to follow the journey to dog ownership taken Maggie and her family. The family researches "What Kind of Pet" in chapter one. Then, they engage in "Narrowing Down the Choices," "Finding a Pet," and "Preparing for a Pet." All of this is followed by a "Mixed Up Mess" quiz that reinforces the sequencing information presented earlier in the text. The nine-word glossary includes pertinent words such as animal shelter, foster home, and responsibility. The "Read More" and "Internet Sites" sections provide informative guides for further study about both pets and pet care. The only inconsistency in the book is that the family says it is looking for a Labrador Retriever, but the dog they actually adopt from a shelter is a mixed breed. Reviewer: Debra Lampert-Rudman
