Overview

TJ Dunn knew the risks when she enlisted for duty in Iraq. People die in war. And like she saw with her army veteran father, the scars of war can be fatally deep. But TJ is determined to carry her weight as a female MP.

When her team is ambushed, TJ is the sole survivor. Struggling to come to terms with the loss of her battalion, she receives more devastating news: her fiancé, stationed in Afghanistan, has committed suicide.

Back home, TJ drifts indifferently from one dead-end job to another until an anonymous phone call shocks her back to life: a top military official is allegedly executing soldiers and masking their deaths as suicides, all to cover up an elaborate heroin-trafficking operation. Determined to avenge her fellow soldiers, TJ vows to bring the traitor to justice — no matter the cost.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
TJ Dunn saw plenty of action as an MP in Iraq, but the real stress came from being told her fiancé, Trent, had committed suicide in Kabul. Her father, who was also in the military, similarly killed himself six years earlier. A year later, in upstate New York, TJ is making a living as a stripper, volunteering for a suicide hotline, and regularly seeing a therapist. A spate of veterans committing suicide fits the media's spin on posttraumatic stress disorder, but one anonymous caller keeps telling TJ that there's something more sinister at work. Vets are being tortured and eliminated because they know too much about illegal activities. Eventually, TJ's mysterious informant leads her to Florida. VERDICT Schreck's hard-hitting, plot-driven conspiracy thriller provides nonstop action with a dizzying blur of weaponry and covert activity. The characters come out of central casting, but are perfect for NCIS: Los Angeles or JAG fans. Schreck (The Vegas Knockout) takes a new direction in this entry, although his series character Duffy Dombrowski plays a cameo role as TJ's sparring partner. Recommend to Merry Jones and Christa Faust readers, i.e., those who like really tough female leads.
