Library Journal - Library Journal
DRAMA Following his Four New Plays (Smith & Kraus, 1993), Foote, the screenwriter of To Kill a Mockingbird, compiles four of his early original stage plays: The Trip to Bountiful, The Chase, The Traveling Lady, and The Roads to Home. (The first three were later made into acclaimed films.) Foote still charms contemporary dramatic audiences with his optimism and compassion; these human dramas of ordinary folks in rural Texas towns with all their fears, foibles, strengths, courage, and love for family, community, and God remain refreshing reading in the 1990s. This compilation lacks the original Broadway/Off-Broadway productions, set designs, and property lists found in the acting editions issued by Dramatists Service, Inc. in the 1950s and 1980s. But Foote comes through as "an artist of spiritual transcendence," to quote Robert Ellerman's introduction. Recommended for all academic libraries and public libraries with theatrical drama collections.Ming-ming Shen Kuo, Ball State Univ. Lib., Muncie, Ind.
