Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This six-play anthology, Pulitzer Prize winner Foote's third after Collected Plays (LJ 9/15/96), takes its title from the last and best selection. Others include "The Day Emily Married," "Tomorrow," "A Coffin in Egypt," "Laura Dennis," and its sequel, "Vernon Early." Aside from "Tomorrow," the 1963 adaptation of a William Faulkner story, these works were copyrighted in the mid-1990s. Harrison, TX, Foote's imaginary community, is the setting for four plays. The themes of family and community, kinship and friendship in small Southern towns threatened by the oil and gas industries are dramatized with compassion and sensitivity. Foote is "a master of capturing the little bits that make up our complicated selves," as James Houghton writes in his introduction. The original production and cast for the first five plays are included. Recommended for public and academic libraries. (Foote's introductory notes not seen.)--Ming-ming Shen Kuo, Ball State Univ.
