An exceptional new on-the-road novel. A veteran returns to find that the world he left behind was really a lesser existence than he learned to live in Viet Nam. A pursuit of the pleasures he owes himself leads through sex and drug-accented journeys to a spiritual illumination of life in the moment and remarkable companions. A life you can't laugh about isn't a life worth living and the companions on this trip are hilarious. Captures the era of free-love, hippies and psychedelic adventurers as experienced with a ferocity that has no fear of death (but with a knowledgable and healthy respect for the scourging and cruxifiction). Literary and engaging, these tales and characters are just too real to be entirely fictive. If you weren't there then, you've gotta see what it was like, and if you were it is just as amazing, profound and knee-slapping funny as you'd remember if you could. Was this review helpful?
